"In Humanitarian Engineering, we aim to educate engineers and scientists to address complex societal challenges," said Patrick Sours, faculty lead of the Humanitarian Engineering Program. "To fully grasp these intricacies, the voices and perspectives of those impacted must be heard, and their values must be considered throughout the design process."

"Faculty and students interested in involving the community in their scholarship should establish genuine relationships with prospective community partners well before writing a grant application or a research project begins," said Jacquelyn Meshelemiah, professor in the College of Social Work.

"In my role, I've witnessed how community engagement transforms not just the community, but the university itself," said Dr. Terron Banner, lecturer in the Department of Arts Administration, Education and Policy and manager of community learning and experience at the Urban Arts Space. "When we approach partnerships with humility and reciprocity, we create opportunities for knowledge exchange that enriches academic discourse with lived experience."
