We are so pleased to congratulate an Engagement Scholarship Consortium national award recipient from Ohio State. Below you will see the recognition for the College of Nursings Shaunta Stanford and the outstanding team supporting and leading the Community Health Worker Training Program. Congratulations on this deserved recognition!
Each spring, the Office of Academic Affairs facilitates several competitive grant programs. The Ohio State Energy Partners grants have recently been awarded and you'll see the connections to community and public engagement. This is certainly exciting as we can raise up the work of our outstanding faculty, staff and students engaging communities in full partnership.
This summer brings the continuation of important work to advance professional development, communities of practice, asset mapping, community partnership development and much more. We are excited to share more about opportunities for your engagement as we enter the new academic year.

Stanford earns Excellence in Staff Community Engagement Award from Engagement Scholarship Consortium
|
|
Shaunta Stanford (third from left), clinical assistant professor of practice and director of Community Health Worker Training Program in the College of Nursing, earned the 2023 Excellence in Staff Community Engagement Award from the Engagement Scholarship Consortium. The Community Health Worker Training Program also received a High Impact Program Award from Ohio State earlier this year.

Ohio State Energy Partners makes annual philanthropic awards
|
|
Ohio State Energy Partners (OSEP) has announced the recipients of its 2023-24 philanthropic awards. The awards provide funding for proposals that align with Ohio States sustainability goals and support the continuation of successful initiatives or the development/implementation of new programs or research projects that continue the trajectory of meeting the goals. As part of its commitment to academic collaboration, OSEP contributes $810,000 annually to the university or affiliated philanthropic causes.

Engaged Scholar Q&A: Timothy McDermott
|
|
"There is unlimited opportunity to engage in Franklin County," says Timothy McDermott, assistant professor and extension educator with OSU Extension. "My relationships have led to partnerships and collaboration. One passion of mine is to engage in on-farm urban agricultural research with farmers, students and faculty to address challenges faced by increasing urban heat due to global climate change."

Now accepting Faculty Fellow applications
|
|
The Office of Academic Affairs (OAA) is now accepting applications to the Faculty Fellow program for the 2023-24 academic year. Faculty Fellows will dedicate a percentage of time (typically 20%-50%) to OAA and participate in a leadership program. This year's applicants will complete projects related to (1) outreach and engagement; development of communities of practice, (2) faculty and staff development, (3) arts initiatives, (4) academic programs and (5) initiatives to build a sense of inclusion for faculty, staff and students. Applications are due June 15.

Students, faculty work to destigmatize drug use, create empathy and save lives
|
|
As part of ongoing work to combat overdose deaths, Ohio State students, including several from the College of Public Health, went to work this spring to educate the Ohio State community about how to stay safe if they use drugs, and how to help others who might be in harms way.
|

Academic Voices: Reflecting on academic excellence
|
|
In her latest post on Academic Voices: A Provosts Blog, Executive Vice President and Provost Melissa Gilliam reflects on the conclusion of another academic year and shares highlights of the many ongoing efforts aimed at supporting Ohio States eminent faculty. These initiatives are making a difference in our efforts to foster academic excellence and ensure that the university remains a destination for faculty at each stage of the faculty career lifecycle.

Register now for the Engagement Scholarship Consortium Conference
|
The 2023 Engagement Scholarship Consortium (ESC) Conference will take place October 4-5 in East Lansing, Michigan. This year's theme is Mobilizing Change through Engaged Scholarship. The conference will provide a platform for intentional conversations about how engaged scholarship can lead to significant, positive impacts in the community and the academy. Ohio State is a member of ESC.

Faculty grants will support engagement in five world regions
|
The Office of International Affairs is seeking applications for its Faculty Research, Teaching and Outreach Grant. The grant supports faculty working on projects that align with the mission and current engagement initiatives of the universitys five Area Studies Centers and their respective regions of the world. Proposed activities should be directly connected to Africa, East Asia, Latin America, Middle East or Eastern Europe and Eurasia. The deadline for submission is June 19.

Drafting and evaluating engagement dossiers
|
Promotion and tenure committees nationwide indicate a need for more effective narrative and evaluation of engagement dossiers. This professional development session from the Engagement Scholarship Consortium will provide examples for junior faculty on how to frame their dossiers for internal and external review. The session will also discuss important attributes to consider when senior faculty are asked to evaluate engagement dossiers. Join the Zoom meeting on June 22 from noon - 1 p.m. Anyone from an ESC member institution, including Ohio State, may attend.

Save the date for WestFest: Sept. 30
|
WestFest is an annual public engagement event that highlights STEM research, sustainability initiatives and outreach programs at The Ohio State University and beyond. WestFest brings together STEM units from across campus and select community partners to present family-friendly activities. This year's event will take place September 30.

Registration Open: 2023 Coalition of Urban and Metropolitan Universities Conference
|
Join the Coalition of Urban and Metropolitan Universities (CUMU) for its 2023 annual conference Resilient Campuses. Resilient Cities. in Washington, D.C., October 15-18. Presenters and attendees will critically examine how our campuses and cities embrace shared understandings and a commitment to fostering greater resilience across themes important to the future of higher education. Ohio State is a member of CUMU.
