Stories and Opportunities for Ohio State's Outreach and Engagement Community

Colleagues,

As we approach the end of the semester, we wish everyone a restful and wonderful holiday season. In thinking of the new year, we are excited to share an update on outreach and engagement activities planned for spring semester:

  • In January, our office will start the first community of practice for graduate students interested in engaged scholarship. More details are in the Opportunities section below.
  • As part of our annual awards program, we will launch our Programs of Excellence in Engaged Scholarship for the university community. This new effort will identify multiple high-impact programs that are advancing research or creative expression and also serving the needs of community partners.
  • Finally, our 2024 Outreach and Engagement Grant program will be announced in January.

Be on the lookout for more information on these new opportunities for engagement, recognition and funding in January 2024.

On a somber and reflective note, we want to acknowledge the loss of a great community leader, Roshelle Pate, known around Columbus as The Food Soldier. As the Columbus Dispatch described, she was a military veteran who extended her vision of community service to her civilian life by organizing hundreds of food giveaways and feeding thousands of people across central Ohio for the better part of a decade.

Roshelle was integral as a community partner with Ohio State and the Columbus Free Clinic. We had the privilege to celebrate with her this past October when the Columbus Free Clinic was awarded the regional W.K. Kellogg Foundation Community Engagement Scholarship Award from the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities. Please take a moment to read more about Roshelles tremendous legacy of community service in the Columbus Dispatch.

Sincerely,

Jason Reece
Vice Provost for Urban Research and Community Engagement

Engaged Scholar Q&A: Shaunta Stanford

"Engaging the community is important because it brings the voices and experiences of the community to the forefront," says Shaunta Stanford, clinical assistant professor of practice and director of the Community Health Worker Training Program in the College of Nursing. "Community members not only provide valuable insight into health and social needs, but they also provide knowledge about assets that aid in the resilience of those neighborhoods."
