A message from Vice Provost Ryan Schmiesing

Thank you.
It is those simple, yet powerful, words that describe how I feel today. The university's relationship with our communities has always been critically important and that importance has only grown over the past several months. As the impact of the pandemic unfolded and our communities have called for action to address racism, many of our faculty, staff and students reached out to community partners and offered assistance; led projects or initiatives; engaged in research or data analysis; or provided input into critical decisions, policies and procedures. The list of engagements is extensive and impressive.
Thank you.
I'm grateful for the work our teams have done and am pleased that we could recognize many outstanding engaged scholars earlier this year. You can read more about them in this newsletter. Our grants program is supporting outstanding projects that are going to provide us great insight into the impacts of successful university-community partnerships and how they are formed and implemented. And, I'm excited to see how programs have adapted to new realities to meet community needs, in new and creative ways.
Thank you.
There is so much more happening! I hope you'll stay connected with our social media channels and website to stay up-to-date with program initiatives, the work of our faculty fellow, awards and recognition, and another grant opportunity this fall.
I end how I began.
Thank you!

Helping older adults combat a quarantine
|
Age-Friendly Columbus and Franklin County is an initiative through Ohio State's College of Social Work that works with older adults in the community to help inform ways to enhance various aspects of its community, whether it's improving public parks or accessibility to transportation.
Since the COVID-19 shutdowns in mid-March, Age-Friendly has pivoted its efforts to helping the older adult community by addressing food insecurity, by delivering necessity bags, and trying to prevent feelings of isolation, through a friendly phone line.

#LatinxWearMasks campaign
|
Local Latino/a leaders met in July to discuss ways to encourage members of the Latinx community to wear masks. Ohio State Community Engaged Scholar Award recipient Dr. Elena Foulis, Department of Spanish and Portuguese, and a local Latina serving organization, Proyecto Mariposas, designed a campaign to encourage mask wearing in the community. Individuals in the Latinx community were asked to submit videos or photos and share why they wear a mask. The two-week video campaign ran from July 17-31. Many Ohio State faculty, staff and students, and community members joined the campaign.

Call for action on racial justice
|
Ohio State has established the Seed Fund for Racial Justice to address the historic and contemporary effects of racism and racial disparities found in all aspects of American society. Grants will be used to seed innovative, untested, and/or exploratory research approaches and creative ideas that will contribute to the elimination of racism and solve its underlying causes and consequences on our campuses, in our community, and across the nation.
