Stories and Opportunities for Ohio State's Outreach and Engagement Community

Colleagues,

With autumn break just around the corner, we are excited to share engagement opportunities from across the university in this months newsletter. I will reflect on one recent engagement experience that has left a lasting impression.

The Office of Outreach and Engagement was recently invited to the Universidad de Las Amricas (UDLA) in Santiago, Chile, to share our experiences in supporting engaged scholarship across the institution. It was an amazing opportunity to not only share examples of the engaged scholarship happening across Ohio State, but to learn of new models of university engagement being implemented by UDLA. I learned about their universitys model of collaborative decision making with community partners and had the opportunity to visit communities and residents currently being served by the university. Community-university collaborations included issues ranging from health care provision and veterinary services to urban design and community development. We hope to continue this collaboration and partnership.

We also hope you can join us on Nov. 1 for our Engaged Scholarship Symposium. United Way of Central Ohio President and CEO Lisa Courtice will be our keynote speaker. Dr. Courtice will share insights on community needs and opportunities for engagement in central Ohio. This years symposium will include panels exploring strong community university partnerships in central Ohio and across the state. We have an additional focus on graduate students with the symposium this year. The symposium will include our second graduate student poster competition and feature a panel exploring graduate student engagement experiences.

You can find more information regarding these upcoming opportunities in our newsletter and on our website. We wish you all a refreshing, productive and enjoyable autumn break.

Sincerely,

Jason Reece

Community Connector Q&A: Haley Shoemaker

"Throughout the last year and a half, weve had a unique opportunity to serve our community in a particular time of need following the unexpected train derailment in East Palestine," said Extension Educator Haley Shoemaker. "During the early response phases, and to this day as we navigate the long-term response, the relationships and genuine trust that were built long before the event are the foundation of how our team has approached each step and conversation."
