The Office of Outreach and Engagement is excited to welcome our incoming Executive Vice President and Provost Ravi V. Bellamkonda. We encourage you to read more about Provost Bellamkondas tremendous experience, leadership philosophy and vision for Ohio State.
Thank you to everyone who participated in the 2024 Engaged Scholarship Symposium. It was an enriching day exploring successful community engaged partnerships. A special note of appreciation to the community partners who joined our conversation and to the graduate students who presented their compelling engaged research.
This month's newsletter features several engagement opportunities for our faculty, staff and graduate students. We are accepting nominations for the 2025 University Outreach and Engagement Awards. In addition to our awards for Community Engaged Scholars, Community Engaged Practitioners and Programs of Excellence in Engaged Scholarship, we have a new award this year for Community Engaged Graduate Students. We encourage you to nominate yourself, colleagues or students who are creating and supporting engaged scholarship. Nominations are due by Dec. 15. We look forward to reviewing this years nominations.

Apply Now: University Outreach and Engagement Awards
|
|
Ohio State is seeking nominations for the 2025 University Outreach and Engagement Awards, which honor faculty, staff and students for outstanding achievement in producing engaged scholarship and community impact. Awards will be given in three categories: Community Engaged Scholar, Community Engaged Practitioner (for staff) and Community Engaged Graduate Student. Apply by Dec. 15.

Call for Proposals: Programs of Excellence in Engaged Scholarship
|
|
To support and promote high-impact engaged scholarship, the Office of Outreach and Engagement has instituted a process to certify programs of excellence in engaged scholarship. The certification process seeks to identify and certify up to 20 projects annually that demonstrate excellence in community engaged scholarship and meet the criteria of high-impact engaged scholarship. Proposals are due Dec. 15.

Engaged Scholar Q&A: Townsand Price-Spratlen
|
|
"I am the product of blood family and other social ties going back generations, who did community engaged activities within and through whatever their life station and place of actions were," said Townsand Price-Spratlen, professor in the Department of Sociology. "By engaging the community in my research and teaching, I am able to honor those women and men, and the foundation(s) their good works built."

Connecting immigrants with essential resources
|
|
For many immigrants, arriving in the United States means confronting formidable barriers in accessing health care and essential resources. According to Lorenzo Benavides, a graduate student in the College of Social Work, it has become increasingly evident that there is a pressing need for a centralized hub of resources for this population in Columbus.

Applications open for the Schweitzer Fellows Program
|
|
The application for the 2025-26 cohort of Columbus-Athens Albert Schweitzer Fellows is now open. The Schweitzer Fellows program supports and trains emerging health-focused graduate and professional students in creating and carrying out service projects to address unmet community needs. Applications are due Feb. 3, 2025.

Ohio State at the 2024 Engagement Scholarship Consortium Conference
|
|
Faculty, staff and students from Ohio State made an impact at the 2024 Engagement Scholarship Consortium Conference. The university had numerous presenters from a wide range of colleges and departments at the conference, which was held in Portland, Oregon.

Submit a proposal for visiting artists
|
The Office of Academic Affairs is now accepting proposals for visiting artists for the 2025-26 academic year. All campuses, academic departments and centers are invited to submit proposals. Proposals from two or more departments and/or centers in collaboration are encouraged. Partnering with community organizations is both allowed and welcomed. Deadline for submissions is Nov. 18.

2024-25 Course Development Grants
|
The 2024-25 Community Engaged Course Development Grant application is open until 9 a.m. on Jan. 27, 2025. Any Ohio State instructor can apply for a grant of up to $4,000 to support the development of a new community engaged course or revising an existing course to include community engagement.

Exploring and Developing Community Engaged Teaching and Learning at Ohio State
|
This introductory workshop explores the kinds of community engaged teaching and learning supported by Ohio State, reviews successful community-based assignments, courses, and programs, and guides participants through the initial stages of designing experiential learning for their courses. The workshop takes place Nov. 18 from 2-3:30 p.m.

Explore international events at Ohio State
|
Nov. 18-22 marks the annual celebration of International Education Week. A joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education, International Education Week is an opportunity to support international exchange and promote a broader understanding of world cultures. Ohio State joins thousands of other institutions worldwide participating in events that bring a global perspective to college campuses.

|
How do we cultivate more caring relations across differences? Across borders? Within ourselves? How might we envision a more caring and just politics? Join this wide-ranging conversation on the Global Arts + Humanities Discovery Theme's 2024-25 Society of Fellows theme: CARE | CULTURE | JUSTICE. The event takes place Dec. 6.

The Womens Place and Faculty Affairs invite you to a workshop on communicating your research to public audiences through op-eds, podcasts and media interviews. This session is on Dec. 9, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and is open to all Ohio State faculty.

Submit Distinguished Scholar and Early Career Distinguished Scholar applications by Nov. 22
|
Nominations are now being accepted for Ohio State's Distinguished Scholar awards. These recognitions are among the highest annual honors Ohio State bestows on a faculty member for outstanding scholarly activity, research or creative works. The university offers two separate awards, based on the different phases of a faculty member's career. Nominations are due Nov. 22 at 5 p.m.

Apply for the 2025 Hayes Forum
|
Graduate students are encouraged to participate in the 39th Edward F. Hayes Advanced Research Forum on Feb. 28. The Hayes Forum is an interdisciplinary event that showcases graduate student research across the full range of graduate degree programs. Cash prizes totaling more than $17,000 will be awarded to the top-judged graduate and postdoctoral presentations in each competitions academic area. The abstract submission deadline is Dec. 9.
