We are excited to announce opportunities to engage with our office, colleagues and the community this fall. On Sept. 13 our Roads Scholars Day will include a visit to engage with community partners on Columbuss historic Near East Side neighborhood. Space is limited and we encourage you to RSVP soon if you would like to participate in this upcoming opportunity.
Our call for proposals has been released for the 2024 graduate student poster competition to be held as part of our Engaged Scholarship Symposium on Nov. 1. Proposals are due Sept. 12. Please consider sharing this opportunity with your community-engaged graduate students.
In addition to our graduate student poster competition, we are happy to kick off the second year of our engaged scholar graduate student community of practice. We hope you can recommend this professional development opportunity for your students who have strong interest in engaged scholarship.

Register for Roads Scholars Day: Near East Side
|
|
Faculty and staff interested in engaged scholarship are invited to join the Office of Outreach Engagement on Sept. 13 to meet with community partners in Columbus on the Near East Side. Throughout the day, participants will have the opportunity to connect with Ohio State faculty, staff, students and local community leaders.

2024 Engaged Scholarship Symposium

Register and join the Office of Outreach and Engagement for the Engaged Scholarship Symposium! On Nov. 1, this event will highlight faculty, staff, graduate students and community partners who are co-creating scholarship.
Through panel discussions and poster presentations, participants will learn more about the innovative and impactful work of community-engaged scholarship at Ohio State.

"It is crucial for scientists to engage with the community. Much of what scientists do is federally funded and for public benefit, so it is critical that the broader community feels connected to scientific discovery," says Sharon Amacher, professor in the Department of Molecular Genetics (College of Arts and Sciences) and in the Department of Biological Chemistry and Pharmacology (College of Medicine).

Register and help us kick off the academic year and join our community! This session will be all about connecting with other students and learning about what our community and the university have to offer for engaged scholars. The meeting will take place on Sept. 4 from 4:30-6 p.m.

On Nov. 1, the 2024 Engaged Scholarship Symposium will feature a graduate student poster competition to provide graduate students an opportunity to share their engaged scholarship. Proposals are due Sept. 12.

Meet the 2024-25 Columbus-Athens Schweitzer Fellows!
|
|
The Schweitzer Fellows Program supports and trains emerging health-focused graduate and professional students in creating and carrying out service projects to address unmet community needs. This year, 10 fellows from The Ohio State University and Ohio University are conducting one-year community service projects of at least 200 service hours. Fellows partner with an existing community agency in the Columbus or Athens area and have both an academic and a community-based mentor.

Understanding Columbus growing immigrant population
|
|
Results from a yearlong research project by the Columbus City Council and the College of Social Work revealed that successful integration and perceived quality of life for new American communities highly depends on their sense of belonging. As lead researcher, Associate Professor Arati Maleku asked policymakers to use this data to better cater to Columbus growing immigrant population.

Gavazzi elected to Academy of Community Engagement Scholarship
|
|
Stephen Gavazzi, director of the CHRR at The Ohio State University and a professor in the College of Education and Human Ecology, has been elected to the Academy of Community Engagement Scholarship (ACES) for his track record of accomplishments related to the production and advancement of scholarship that serves the public good.

Kirwan Institute welcomes new senior manager for community outreach and strategic partnerships
|
|
Longtime central Ohio public administrator and community mobilizer Carla Williams-Scott has been named senior manager for community outreach and strategic partnerships at the Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity. Williams-Scott most recently served as director of the Department of Neighborhoods for the city of Columbus. She began her role at Ohio State on Aug. 12.

Register for the Engagement Scholarship Consortium Conference
|
The 2024 Engagement Scholarship Consortium (ESC) Conference will take place Oct. 9-10 in Portland, Oregon. This year's theme is "Pathways to Prosperity: Building Sustainable Futures through Community Engagement." The conference will be a place for engaging conversations about the many ways that we work collaboratively to define and build social and economic prosperity. The early-bird registration deadline is Sept. 15. Ohio State is a member of ESC.

Propel Ohio application now open
|
The application for Propel Ohio 2024 is now live! It will be open until Sept. 9. Propel Ohio is a statewide student conference organized in partnership with the Community Campus Coalition to promote civic engagement and student leadership. During Propel, U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown will engage with college students as they work to create change in their Ohio communities.

WestFest is recruiting program partners for 2024
|
The eighth annual Ohio State West Campus Science and Sustainability Festival (WestFest) will take place on Oct. 19 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. WestFest is a family-friendly, interactive annual event that showcases advances in STEM, sustainability and outreach from across campus and throughout central Ohio.
The WestFest planning committee is seeking program partners for the 2024 event, which requires each partner to have a child-appropriate activity for event attendees. The WestFest team handles the logistics of the event and offers support to program partners that need some help developing their activity. Departments, units, research groups and student organizations are invited to sign up.

Registration Open: Coalition of Urban and Metropolitan Universities Conference
|
Join the Coalition of Urban and Metropolitan Universities (CUMU) for its 2024 annual conference "Beyond Boundaries" in MinneapolisSaint Paul, Minnesota, Oct. 20-23. Attendees will critically examine how our campuses are building bridges that span real and perceived boundaries to enhance the well-being of our students, communities and regions. Ohio State is a member of CUMU.

New monthly seminar on qualitative and community-engaged research methods
|
The Advanced Seminar on Qualitative and Community Engaged Research Methods will meet monthly starting in September to help scholars deepen their expertise in the use of these methods. Faculty members, graduate students, clinical researchers, postdoctoral scholars and research staff members are welcome from across Ohio State departments and Wexner Medical Center units.

|
Campus Compact is now accepting proposals for the Compact25 conference that explore the theme "Uniting through Public Purpose: Coalition Building for Impact." Proposals are due Sept. 27. Ohio State is a member of Campus Compact.
