Engaged Scholars Academy inaugural cohort

The Office of Outreach and Engagement kicked off the Engaged Scholars Academy with its first meeting at the Fawcett Center at the end of August. The one-year cohort-based leadership and professional development initiative is aimed at strengthening engaged scholarship at Ohio State and building relationships between community partners and faculty.

Spark Grants for arts engagement

Funded by the Mellon Foundation, Spark Grants provide seed funding for community-engaged arts projects. The competition is open to faculty, students and staff members on any Ohio State campus for projects that center the arts and that are done in partnership with community organizations. Proposals involving communities served by our regional campuses are especially welcome and will receive priority consideration. Proposals are due March 13.

Register for the 2026 Patterson Lecture with Kansas State University President Richard Linton

Register now and plan to join Kansas State University President Richard Linton as he delivers the 2026 James F. Patterson Land-Grant University Lecture on April 16. The registration deadline is March 31.

Dr. Richard H. Linton is the 15th president of Kansas State University, serving in the role since February 2022. At Kansas State, Linton has led the creation and implementation of Next-Gen K-State, a strategic plan that will guide the university through 2030 and beyond.

The Engagement Scholarship Consortium (ESC) offers webinars and online professional development, as well as networking opportunities for faculty, practitioners, graduate students and university leaders throughout the year.     Sharing strategies for rural businesses

    When the coronavirus outbreak forced shutdowns throughout Ohio, OSU Extensions community development teams went to work to help businesses throughout the state endure what was to come. In Noble County located in Ohios southeast, rural Appalachian region where 90% of the businesses are small, those on Extensions community development team began with a business survey to determine what the economic impact might look like. We sent it out early to see what people were thinking, what they were feeling, how long owners thought their businesses could stay open, said Gwynn Stewart, the local community development educator. It gave us information on a three-to-five month window to what resources and support we needed to be giving our business owners. It also let people know were here for them.

    Keeping her community healthy, educated and safe

    Tubuos passion to care for people has been on full display during the COVID-19 outbreak. Shes offered free delivery to customers, often delivering items herself. Shes donated masks to senior living facilities and sanitizers to Powells first responders. Shes amplified her online presence to provide educational resources. And for consultations, Tubuo and her team are regularly in contact with patients through telehealth and phone calls.

    Predictive modeling, data curation helps guide state in COVID-19 response

    With a dissertation on building models for influenza pandemics and years of experience working with health departments on complex public health problems, Ayaz Hyder was about as prepared as you could be to meet the challenges brought by the COVID-19 pandemic. Thanks to support from Ohio States Office of Research and Office of Outreach and Engagement, the assistant professor of environmental health sciences is using his expertise in computational epidemiology to develop a shared data resource for agencies and organizations that are responding to COVID-19 and leading recovery efforts across Ohio.

    Getting the perspective of the community on community-engaged research

    As land-grant universities such as Ohio State encourage more community-based research by faculty and funders such as the National Science Foundation incentivize more collaboration between researchers and communities, one critical voice in the process is often missing the perspective of the community member. A new study being undertaken by four Ohio State faculty members looks to establish best practices for including the community perspective as they look at how large, land-grant research institutions can build meaningful community relationships while conducting research.

    Curtis named faculty fellow in the Office of Outreach and Engagement

    Kip Curtis, associate professor of Environmental History/Mansfield campus, has joined the Office of Outreach and Engagement as a faculty fellow. In this role, he will continue his focus on the development and implementation of a replicable model of community engagement that results in expansion of the Mansfield Microfarm to other Ohio communities.
