On behalf of The Ohio State University, the Offices of Outreach and Engagement, International Affairs, Undergraduate Education, and the Service-Learning Initiative recognize faculty, staff and students for outstanding achievement with the University Outreach and Engagement Recognition Awards program. The overall top partnership, which receives the University Outreach and Engagement Award, serves as the university's nominee for the national C. Peter Magrath University Community Engagement Award.

Young Scholars Program

The Young Scholars Program (YSP), a comprehensive pre-collegiate and collegiate program, enhances the academic, personal, and career development skills of students from low-income families to prepare them for college success. Founded in 1988, YSP identifies academically talented first-generation middle and high school students from Ohio's nine largest urban school districts: Akron, Canton, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus, Dayton, Lorain, Toledo, and Youngstown.
YSP has made it possible for nearly 800 students to become first-generation college graduates. With exemplary community engagement for over 25 years, YSP works with superintendents, principals, and counselors to significantly improve student performance and district graduation rates.
YSP works with parents to become more involved in their children's learning. Hundreds of parents and siblings have earned G.E.D.s and college degrees in the process, contributing to the growth and improvement of their communities.

US-Indonesian Teacher Education Consortium

The U.S.Indonesian Teacher Education Consortium (USINTEC) is a partnership of three U.S. research universities and 13 Indonesian state universities working to improve Indonesian education, teacher preparation and teacher quality. The project has focused on the implementation of an international dual degree program, a three-month visiting scholar program at Ohio State's College of Education and Human Ecology for Indonesian doctoral and post-doctoral students, and the support of Fulbright scholarships to the U.S. and Indonesia. The consortium, established as a bi-national higher education consortium in 2006, builds on more than two decades' worth of U.S.Indonesian relationships. Universal Design and Farming with Arthritis

Arthritis is a disease common to older adults and especially Ohio farmers due to high-risk work demands. Arthritis impacts one's health, quality of life, and economic livelihood. The purpose of this project is to encourage arthritis prevention and management efforts. Impacts include:
Arthritis screening tool for farmers developed, revised, and tested over the past three years and shared with Extension agents in six states.
Training manuals developed and disseminated to OSU Extension educators to replicate project.
Over 800 Ohio farmers and rural older adults screened. A majority had minimal-moderate risk for arthritis and encouraged to contact local healthcare providers.
Sixty-one students from OSU and Shawnee State learned about health problems of rural older adults and trained to administer screenings.
Fifty-five community healthcare professionals received continuing education in arthritis.

Sustainable Futures for Linden Village

The Sustainable Futures for Linden Village project is a partnership between OSU faculty in the Colleges of Engineering, Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences and the Greater Linden Development Corporation (GLDC). It closely relates to a comprehensive local redevelopment initiative, designed to revitalize and improve a target urban area surrounding the Linden McKinley STEM Academy. This initiative integrates urban revitalization, home rehabilitation, energy retrofit, repair and maintenance with sustainable development goals.
The OSU project team, community partners and involved students have worked to enhance local revitalization efforts by providing technical assistance to the community and increasing the awareness, knowledge, and skills of local community residents, teachers/students, and organizations in sustainable community and housing development.
This project is innovative in that it integrates larger scale healthy community and green infrastructure planning, GIS mapping for urban opportunity, and micro-scale green home renovation and new construction.

Development of Agronomy for Sustainable Food Production in Senegal

"Development of agronomy for sustainable food production in Senegal" works to implement state-of-the-art agricultural academic, research and service programs at the University of Gaston Berger, focused on enhancing sustainable agriculture. The Ohio State University has collaborated on updating laboratories and established associate and BS degree programs in agronomy with coursework on agribusiness, soil and water management and crop production. The project also looks to transfer the land grant model to the University of Gaston Berger, incorporating extension and research into the traditional teaching role of the university.

The Green Building Service-Learning Program

The Green Building Service-Learning Program was designed to provide hands-on learning experience to OSU students enrolled in the Green Building and Sustainable Construction course for solving real-world problems. It also aimed to serve the sustainable development needs of local communities by offering research/outreach services, technical assistance, and hands-on field activities.
Led by the instructor, students enrolled in the course have conducted numerous service learning projects under this program to help local communities with their energy retrofitting, new green home development, and onsite renewable energy projects. Each of these projects was specifically designed and executed to meet the green project requirements, community needs, and learning objectives of this course.
Besides directly contributing to the communities' sustainable development process and enhancing their project outcomes, the instructor, students and internal/external partners have actively disseminated the knowledge gained through integrated education, research, outreach and service learning activities to a broader audience.

Cardinal Health

Cardinal Health partners with the Ohio State University to improve the health and well-being of the Columbus community. Their work has focused on two growing public health concerns: prescription drug abuse and childhood obesity. Beginning in 2009, Cardinal Health began partnering with the Ohio State University's College of Pharmacy to develop a program that would target the growing problem of prescription drug misuse and abuse. The Generation Rx Initiative aims to enhance the public's understanding of medication safety with a focus on prescription drug abuse through a variety of programs and online resources.
Cardinal Health also works with Healthy Weight 0-5, a new initiative aimed at ensuring that Columbus children are at a healthy weight when they enter kindergarten. The Community and Youth Collaborative Institute (CAYCI) in the College of Social Work has been working with Cardinal Health in the development and evaluation of this Initiative, which also includes partners such as Nationwide Childrens, Columbus Public Health, Action for Children, and the YMCA. Cardinal Health also works to address the needs of at-risk youth during the summer by supporting the Learning in Fitness and Education (LiFE) Sports Initiative

Staff Award for Excellence in Community Service Engagement
Jennifer Anthony

Originally an AmeriCorps VISTA volunteer at the Ohio State Newark campus, Jennifer Anthony was hired to direct Newark's Office of Access and Engagement at the conclusion of her service term. Newark faculty and staff credit her with dramatically increasing Ohio State Newark's community impact. Her initiatives include:
Facilitating EXPLORE College, an intensive five-week college planning program that brings 20-30 Newark families to campus for five four-hour workshops each spring;
Teaching Next Step Mentoring and Tutoring, a class that trains students who provide twice-weekly tutoring to at-risk teens involved in the county juvenile court system;
Piloting an internship program pilot that trains students to offer after-school exercise programs for schoolchildren that uses the nationally recognized SparkPE curriculum for students with ADHD;

Student Award for Excellence in Community Service
Angel Algarin, Ee Jye Poi

Angel is a student with the Leadership and Service course at Ohio State. He volunteers with Ethiopian Social Services, an organization that assists foreign arrivals in acclimating to life in the United States. He volunteers his time working with adult refugees who have been in the US for less than 5 years and have limited English speaking skills. He works with them to help them learn basic English vocabulary, such as the days of the week. He considers his volunteer work an opportunity to develop interpersonal skills while also learning about the development of language skills for a potential career in teaching. Angel has volunteered 30 hours so far, and hopes to continue volunteering with the organization once he returns from studying abroad in his third year at Ohio State.

Growing up in a developing country in Southeast Asia, Ee Jye witnessed people suffering from vaccine-preventable diseases. Ee Jye has become an advocate for immunization, co-chairing the Operation Immunization (OI) Campaign as organized by the American Pharmacists Association Academy of Student Pharmacists (APhA-ASP). As a co-chair, her goals were to increase the public's knowledge of flu vaccinations while also increasing the number of adults receiving flu vaccinations. She collaborated with local Giant Eagle and CVS pharmacies to allow Pharmacy students to provide immunizations and education to patients at clinics. She also created posters to place on campus buses to increase student awareness of flu season. Overall, Ee Jye arranged or organized 33 flu shots events where a total of 2,200 patients were vaccinated.

For many years, The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy Student Chapter of the American Pharmacists Association has engaged in community service activities and projects that have impacted thousands of Ohio Citizens.
In addition, while engaging in service, student pharmacists have developed professional, administrative and quality patient care skill sets that augment the Doctor of Pharmacy curriculum delivered by the faculty at the College of Pharmacy.
Through 11 American Pharmacist Association Academy of Student Pharmacists (APhA-ASP) patient care projects -- including Generation Rx, the Heartburn Awareness Challenge, Operation Diabetes (Education), Operation Diabetes (Screening), Operation Heart, Operation Immunization, Be Poison Smart!/Wise!, Katy's Kids, Open Airways for Schools, and Prescription for a Smile -- student pharmacists have engaged with a variety of Central Ohio and Ohio Community Partners to deliver quality patient care and health education. All activities are planned and led by students.
